PHRASAL VERBS

Meaning of Phrasal Verbs -phrasal verbs are words made up of Verb and Preposition or Adverb Particle (across, on, in, down, about etc.). Using these, the language seems effective. You can never guess the meaning of Phrasal Verbs made from that Verb only by knowing its meaning. The only solution is to memorize them by rote. Phrasal Verbs formed from some major Verbs are being given below along with meaning and sentence usage.

BEAR

BRING

BRING(phrasal Verbs)

CARRY

DRAW
1. Draw off (. बापिस बुला लेना, हटा लेना  )
They drew off their men before the enemy entered the city .
2. Draw near (. पास आना )
Students work hard when their examination draws near.
3.draw on (चेक काटना. )
I have drawn on my bank more than rs.4000 during this week .
4.draw out .(पता लगा लेना.  )
This magistrate drew out the truth by cross examining the accused .
5. draw up-(क्रम में लगाना)

FLY

FLY(phrasal Verbs)
1. fly at-(झपटा मारना)
The cat will fly at the mouse and kill it.

2. fly out- (जल्दबाजी से बाहर निकलना)
He opened the cage and the parrot flew out.
3. fly away-(दूर भाग जाना)
If the pigeons are let out of their cages, they will certainly fly away.

4. fly open-(झटके से खुलना)
He touched a spring and the gate flew open.



5. fly off-(नो दो ग्यारह हो जाना)
As we came near, the cat rose and flew off.

6. fly Into- (उड़ कर अन्दर चले जाना)
A crow flew into my room and let fall a picture hanging against the wall

GIVE(phrasal Verbs)
1. give up(छोड़ देना)
I have given up the idea of working in partnership with him.
2. give in-(मान लेना)
You must give in to save your life.
3. give out-(देना)
I have given out my views, you may or may not like them.
4. give over- (सौंपना)
The President gave over the charge to the Vice-President.
5. give way-( रास्ता छोड़ना)
The crowd gave way, when the police let off tear gas.
6. give away-(बांटना)
After the Principal’s report, the chief guest gave away the prizes.
HOLD(phrasal Verbs)
1. hold on-(चालू रखना, चलते रहना)
The trade between India and Nepal held on for many years.
2. hold out- (पेश करना)
Don’t hold out false promises to any one, it will bring you bad name.
3. hold over-(रोक लेना)(स्थगित करना)
For want of quorum, the meeting was held over for some other day.
4. hold In-(रोक कर रखना)
He was highly annoyed with his servant, but he held in his anger.
5. hold up-(रोक कर लूटना)
The terrorists are holding up several innocent people almost everyday.
6. hold with-(पक्षपातपूर्ण विवहार करना)

KEEP(phrasal Verbs)

1. keep back(छुपाना)
Don’t keep back anything from your doctor, otherwise you can’t recover soon.
2. keep down(कुचलना, दबा देना)
The police kept down vagabonds by keeping a strict watch over them.
3. keep in-(स्कूल खत्म होने के बाद भी रोक कर रखना)
Some teachers keep in the students who are irregular in their home-work.
4. keep up-(बनाए रखना)
The Government is trying hard to keep up the prices of sugar and wheat.
5. keep to(कहे अनुसार काम करना)
You must keep to your words like a gentleman.
6. keep out(सुरक्षित रखना)

LOOK(phrasal Verbs)
1. look after. देखभाल करना)
He left me to look after his garden in his absence.
2.look for(ढूंढना)

RUN

RUN(phrasal Verbs)
1. run after(पीछा करना)
The boy ran after the scooter and hurt himself.
2. run away-( डर के भाग जाना)
The Pakistani soldiers threw down their arms and ran away.
13. run out(खराब हो जाना)
If the machine is worked and not oiled from time to time, it will soon run out.
4. run over(नीचे आ जाना)
The car ran over a dog and killed it.
5. run through(जल्दबाजी में पढ़ लेना)
On the examination night. I ran through the book in an hour.
6. run against-(टक्कर हो जाना)
The Titanic ran against a rock and sank down.

SEE

SEE(phrasal Verbs)
1. see about-(समझना)
He promised to see me about the matter.
2.see off(विदा करना)
I was seen off by many of my friends at the airport.

3. see over-(tour and examine a building or site.) समर्थन करना।
You must see over the house with your parents before you buy it.
4. see through (सहायता करना)
He promised to see me safely through come what may.

SET

SET(phrasal Verbs)
1. set about (शुरू करना)
I must set about my packing for my long journey.
2. set aside-(रद्द करना, रखना)
Let us set aside our personal feelings in this matter.
3. set forth-(यात्रा आरंभ करना,शामिल होना)
Set forth this condition in the agreement we are going to enter into.
4. set in-(शुरु होना)
The rainly season sets in after summer.
5. set out-(प्रस्थान करना)

STAND

STAND(phrasal Verbs)
1. stand against-(विरोध करना)

2.stand aside-(कुछ भी नहीं करना)
He’s a man who never stands aside when there is something that needs doing
3. stand by-(इंतज़ार करना)
I promise to stand by whatever happens. Please stand by for our next programme.
4. stand for- (तारीफ करना)
She says she’s not going to stand for her own children disobeying her.

TAKE

TAKE(phrasal Verbs)

1. take after-resemble a parent or ancestor.(हमशक्ल होना)
She takes after her mother
2. take away( छीन लेना)
The thieves took away all the jewellery from his house at the dead of night.
3. take down-(लिख लेना)
Students took down what the teacher wrote on the blackboard.

TURN

TURN(phrasal verbs)
1. turn down.(मना करना)

WAIT
